November Projects - Fifth of November

Mon Nov 5, 2007, 5:00 AM
While I am still working on the Twilight series art book, I will be putting together a portfolio for my school's diversity club, S.T.A.R. (Students Taking Action Responsibly). This will probably be an extensive project, and I will be seeking students who are confident and are willing to show the school that they are not afraid to be themselves. While the project will be mostly photograpy, I will probably include a video presentation on diversity to submit to the school's media department. I am still working out the details, but anyone who is interested in any of the three projects is more than welcome to contact me with questions.

P.S. Elections for student officers for S.T.A.R. were held today during the first half of lunch in Mrs. Leah McKinney's classroom yesterday. Any Hurricane High School student who has not joined, but is interested in joining, may still sign up! Dues are $3 throughout the week.

Here are our wonderful Officers!

"Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot..."

Guy Fawkes & the Gunpowder Plot
Words of "Remember, Remember" refer to Guy Fawkes with origins in 17th century English history. On the 5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several dozen barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his co-conspirators for plotting against the government. He was tried by Judge Popham who came to London specifically for the trial from his country manor Littlecote House in Hungerford, Gloucestershire. Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practiced (hung ,drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of treason.

The Tradition begins...
The following year in 1606 it became an annual custom for the King and Parliament to commission a sermon to commemorate the event. Lancelot Andrewes delivered the first of many Gunpowder Plot Sermons. This practice, together with the nursery rhyme, ensured that this crime would never be forgotten! Hence the words “Remember, remember the 5th of November" The poem is sometimes referred to as ';Please to remember the fifth of November'. It serves as a warning to each new generation that treason will never be forgotten. In England the 5th of November is still commemorated each year with fireworks and bonfires culminating with the burning of effigies of Guy Fawkes (the guy). The 'guys' are made by children by filling old clothes with crumpled newspapers to look like a man. Tradition allows British children to display their 'guys' to passers-by and asking for " A penny for the guy".

V For Vendetta, a recently released movie, envelopes the fifth of November, and you can follow V through this incredible story about a very important day in history. I greatly recommend watching this movie. Who knows...today might be a magnificently interesting day, too. V for Vendetta is a ten-issue comic book series written by Alan Moore and illustrated mostly by David Lloyd, set in a dystopian future United Kingdom imagined from the 1980s about the 1990s. A mysterious anarchist named "V" works to destroy the totalitarian government, profoundly affecting the people he encounters.

The series is set in a near-future Britain after a limited nuclear war, which has left much of the world destroyed. In this future, an extreme fascist party called Norsefire has arisen and is now the ruling power. "V", an anarchist revolutionary dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask, begins an elaborate, violent, and theatrical campaign to bring down the government.
